Empowering Farmers for Climate-Resilient Agriculture: A Success Story from Machakos County

Jake Megatech Limited, in collaboration with USAID and Yali RLC East Africa, has been instrumental in supporting 31 Kangundo farmers to cultivate high-quality Kenya Fedha sunflower seeds organically under the Climate-Resilient Agri-Circular Project (CRAP). Through a one-week training program, farmers were equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills, provided with free seeds, and received weekly field visits and mentorship from Jake Megatech’s extension officers. This initiative aimed at enhancing their capacity in climate-resilient farming practices.

As the sunflower crops approach maturity, the farmers are anticipating a bountiful harvest. Jake Megatech Ltd has committed to purchasing the high-quality sunflower seeds from these farmers, thereby augmenting their financial income and diversifying their crop portfolio. The collaboration between Jake Megatech, USAID, and Yali RLC East Africa has not only empowered these farmers but also paved the way for sustainable agricultural practices in the region.

With the success of this project, more farmers in Machakos County have expressed interest and willingness to engage in climate-adaptive farming. This momentum is expected to transform Machakos County into a sunflower-growing belt, aligning with the government’s agenda for food security and contributing to the global initiative for climate change adaptation. The partnership between private enterprises, government agencies, and international organizations underscores the importance of collective efforts in fostering sustainable agricultural practices and addressing the challenges of climate change.
